PhD Scholarship: C20th and C21st Performer Training (Europe and Russia)- University of Leeds

The School of Performance & Cultural Industries (PCI) at the University of Leeds is offering a PhD Scholarship in C20th and C21st Performer Training.  Applications are requested from candidates with Masters or equivalent in a related subject area for a scholarship in a dynamic school housed in the new performance venue, Stage@Leeds, at the heart of the University campus.

The successful student would be a member of the Theatre, Dance and Performance Research grouping in the School of PCI and would be expected to contribute to the annual activities of the TaPRA Working Group, C20-21st Performer Training. PCI is currently engaged in several initiatives focusing on training, including a proposed international journal, a masterclass by Andriy Zholdak, and an annual postgraduate festival.

Proposals, which may be practice-led, might respond to the following sub-themes, although these should not be read as prescriptive:

  • Derivations, lineages and (false) traditions of performer training

  • The currency of historic training methodologies in the C21st

  • Documentation and training

  • The languages of training and the problems of translation

This three-year scholarship will consist of full UK/EU fees (or an equivalent contribution towards international fees) and a £6000 annual bursary. The bursary includes an expectation of 3 hours teaching per week or equivalent editorial support work for a new Performer Training journal at approval stage with the publishers.

Applications, together with a three-page research proposal, need to be sent to Linda Smith by the deadline.  An online application can be made here: http://www.leeds.ac.uk/students/research_degrees.htm

The lead supervisor for the PhD project will be Professor Jonathan Pitches and the project may, if appropriate, include collaboration with the Dept of Russian at the University of Leeds.
